Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

An aidhm leis an modúl seo ná mic léinn a chur ag machnamh ar an bhfoghlaim teanga ar feadh an tsaoil. Leagtar an-bhéim ar litríocht na sprioctheanga agus ar an smaointeoireacht chriticiúil agus chruthaitheacht a threisiú. Déantar seo trí mheán plé sa seomra ranga agus ar líne mar gheall ar acmhainní léitheoireachta don fhoghlaimeoir, an foghlaimeoir fásta le Gaeilge ach go háirithe. Aidhm eile leis an modúl ná tarraingt ar fheasacht chultúrtha na mac léinn agus díriú ar an bhforbairt phearsanta trí ghníomhaíochtaí beirte/grúpa, an fhoghlaim chumaisc agus taithí ar chuairt ghearr ar an nGaeltacht. Dírítear ar an deis a bhaineann leis an líonrú le foghlaimeoirí eile agus le cainteoirí cumasacha eile sa mhionteanga a fhiosrú agus a chleachtadh. [Translation for internal use only] The module aims to encourage students to reflect on lifelong language learning. The focus is on literature as a resource for the language learner and developing critical and creative thinking. Reading material for the language learner, and the adult learner/reader in particular, is the primary focus. A further aim of the module is to build on students' cultural awareness and personal development during collaborative pair and group activities in a blended learning approach throughout the semester, as well as during a short language immersion experience. The potential of networking with other language learners and competent speakers in the minority language context is explored and practised.

An t-inspreagadh san fhoghlaim teanga - foghlaim ar feadh an tsaoil; comhoibriú agus líonrú le foghlaimeoirí agus le cainteoirí eile; uirlisí tacaíochta ríomhchuidithe don obair ghrúpa; léargais ar an bhfoghlaim teanga - fócas ar fhoirm; próiseis léitheoireachta agus éisteachta; ag sealbhú na foghraíochta; botúin choitianta sa teanga a aithint; straitéisí forbartha don chumarsáid agus don láithreoireacht; foghlaim tasc-bhunaithe agus cur chuige réiteach fadhbanna; anailís chriticiúil ar dhul chun cinn sna ceithre scil teanga agus sna tuiscintí ar an bhfeasacht chultúrtha; plean fadtéarmach foghlama teanga a chur le chéile; tréimhse foghlama sa Ghaeltacht (4). [Translation for internal use only] the role of motivation in language learning - life-long learning; cooperating and networking with other Irish language learners and speakers; using computer assisted support tools for group work; insights into form-focused language learning; listening and reading processes; acquiring pronunciation; identifying common errors in the target language; strategies enhanced for communication and presenting; a task-based and problem solving learning approach to learning; critical analysis of progress in the four language skills and insights relating to cultural awareness; developing a life-long language learning plan; Gaeltacht learning experience (4).

Agus an modúl seo críochnaithe go rathúil ag an mac léinn, beidh sé/sí in ann: anailís chriticiúil a dhéanamh ar cúrsaí inspreagaidh d'fhoghlaimeoir mhionteanga agus grinnscrúdú a dhéanamh ar a c(h)uid straitéisí féin i leith an chomhoibrithe le foghlaimeoirí eile, le cainteoirí cumasacha & le pobal na Gaeilge/Gaeltachta; iniúchadh a dhéanamh a c(h)uid straitéisí féin chun scileanna cumarsáide agus chur i láthair sa Ghaeilge a fhorbairt; agus cumas a léiriú go mbeidh sé/sí in ann plean pearsanta fadtéarmach a leagan amach chun barr feabhais a chur ar a c(h)uid scileanna léitheoireachta sa Ghaeilge ach go háirithe. [Translation for internal use only] On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to: critically analyse the motivational issues involved in learning a minority language and evaluate his /her own strategies around cooperation with other language learners, competent speakers, the Irish language community & Gaeltacht community; examine his/her own strategies to develop communicative and oral presentation skills in Irish; and illustrate the ability to develop a life-long learning plan to make further progress in reading skills in Irish in particular.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Cuirfear an modúl i láthair trí chur chuige cumaisc a úsáid ina dhéanfaidh foghlaimeoirí tascanna sioncronacha agus aisioncronacha a chur i gcrích go leanúnach thar tréimhse dhá sheimeastar. Bainfidh na mic léinn úsaid as uirlisí foghlama fíorúla chun iad a chumasú ar mhodhanna cumarsáide, chun teacht ar ábhair, doiciméadú a dhéanamh ar a gcuid taithí foghlama pearsanta, agus chun glacadh le haiseolas ar na tascanna agus fóraim ar-líne. Beidh tascanna seachtainiúla le déanamh ag na foghlaimeoirí agus gheobhaidh siad aiseolas ar chomhréir, ar bhotúin ghramadaí, ar litriú, ar an scríbhneoireacht acadúil agus ar an saibhriú teanga. Cuirfear treoracha soiléire ar fáil ar Sulis ag tús gach seachtain maidir leis an tasc agus tacófar leis na mic léinn san fhóraim chainte. Beidh fáil ar acmhainní ábhartha ar an suíomh ag an mac léinn. Beidh turas Gaeltachta mar chuid lárnach den mhodúl. Beidh cara criticiúil / cairde criticiúla ag gach foghlaimeoir ina mbeidh obair bheirte agus ghrúpa mar áis chun An Fhéile Léitheoireachta ag deireadh an tseimeastair a phlé agus a eagrú. Tarraingíonn an modúl ar thaighde atá déanta i réimse foghlama an dara teanga (Dörnyei and Skehan, 2003; Ellis 2007) ina gcuirfear béim ach go háirithe ar an Dea-Fhoghlaimeoir Teanga (Naiman et al, 1995; Griffiths, 2008). Cuirfear torthaí taighde a bhaineann le taighde tráthúil ar an dea-fhoghlaimeoir Gaeilge (Ní Chlochasaigh, 2014) i bhfeidhm i dteagasc an mhodúil. Cuirfear béim ar ról an inspreagtha agus an aitheantas teanga i gcás foghlaim an dara teanga (Dörnyei and Ushioda, 2009) ach go háirithe maidir le plean fadtéarmach foghlama a ullmhú. Tugfar aird ar thaighde maidir le próiséis léitheoireachta agus éisteachta (Cook, 2008) chomh maith le cur chuigí tasc-bhunaithe sa láithreoireacht teanga (Ellis, 2003). Áireofar an taighde comhaimseartha ar an nua-chainteoir Gaeilge (Walsh et al. 2015) chomh maith le suntas a thabhairt ar ról an chultúir i bhfoghlaim na teanga mhionlaigh (Flynn, 2013). Aithneofar na forbairtí nuálacha maidir le foghlaim ionduchtach na gramadaí agus fócas ar fhoirm (Ó Duibhir et al. 2016; Ó Ceallaigh, 2013). [Translation for internal use only] The module will be delivered in a blended learning capacity where continuous synchronous and asynchronous tasks will be organised for the learner over tow semesters. Virtual learning tools on Sulis will aid learners in fostering methods of communication, accessing content, documenting their personal learning experience and receiving constructive feedback through the online forums and lessons. Working with a critical colleague/critical colleagues students through computer assisted pair and group work will organise an end of semester literature event. Students will be required to carry out weekly tasks, and formative feedback will be provided to students on each task in terms of syntax, grammar inaccuracies, spelling errors, academic writing skills and language enrichment. A clear and concise guide to lessons and tasks to be logged will be published on the virtual learning site at the beginning of every week and support will be available through the discussion forums. Relevant resources will be uploaded for download on the module site. A Gaeltacht trip will form a core element of the module.
